Sueo

Sueo comes to the Hilo Farmers Market to sell his home grown mamaki tea and noni pulp twice a week. He has a prominent regular spot on the corner of the street, and everyone knows him. Passers by are invited to try his home made mamaki tea either hot or cold, with lemon and sugar. What one notices most when they stop by Sueo’s booth is an abundance of literature on Hilo’s Rainbow Friends Animal Shelter. Sueo’s great love of animals is evident, as he shares stories of the fourteen dogs and five cats that share his home, and the fifty five and growing pig family that have taken over his yard. Sueo’s age is elusive. His long, lanky and fluid person defies his eighty years. He was born on 9/9/26, the last of nine children. He believes in numerology and the nines are very significant to him. He fought in World War II. In the Sixties he began working as a healer, and started growing and working with healing herbs in the Ninties. Although he downplays his healing abilities, he realizes for better or for worse that he has healing powers and that it is his responsibility to use them. He and his wife Sharene plant, pick and process everything themselves. He knows exactly when and how to harvest his plants. Timing is a critical aspect of farming in order to optimize the healing power and nutritional value of the plants.
